Bach and the Saxon-Polish Succession

Peter Van Heyghen, conductor

In 1733, Bach presented the new Saxon Elector and Polish King Augustus III with a musical gift—the Missa BWV 232 (Kyrie and Gloria)—hoping to secure the title of Dresden court composer. The following year, he composed the celebratory cantata BWV 215 for the royal couple’s visit to Leipzig. These works, including their grand double-choir movements, would later be incorporated into his monumental Mass in B minor. In 1736, Bach finally received his coveted title: Composer to the Royal Court of Poland and Electoral Court of Saxony.
